The title of this thesis project signifies the intersection of the Interstate 710 and Interstate 105 urban freeways in the center of Los Angeles. In a not-so-distant future of a post-fossil fuel era, traffic behavior will be changed by hybrid and electrified transport by way of self-driving cars and networked on-demand services. It will, however, remain reliant on the infrastructure of roads and freeways. Without noise and air pollution, places which have long been inhospitable and uncomfortable will generate new qualities. The proposed intervention exploits the enormous spatial capacities of these interchanges, moving in scale between object-oriented architecture and the dimension of urban planning. This intervention consists of a uniform ring forming a frame around a concrete transport hub. The ring-shaped construction renders accessible the remaining areas of the transport hub and endows it with a new function, thus furthering and developing urban processes. This proposal for an appreciation of the paradigmatic space of the twentieth century—infrastructural space—inscribes a personality into a former urban white patch and enhances the lifespan of the infrastructure through inserting a revised purpose. Architecture thus projects identity and history onto a non-place, one formerly used purely for transit. The interchange as a monument to the automobile is transformed into a memento of its time, into a framed sculpture, whose structural figure is characterized by the genius loci.
