entitled "Peripheries-Peripherocene"
The notion of “Peripherocene” draws attention to the intersection of the urban periphery under the pressure of the Anthropocene, the present era in which social and natural forces push against one another causing the environmental breakdown of the planet. The aim of the special issue is to theorise the periphery-Anthropocene nexus and to investigate the formal, material, and spatial consequences. It requires architectural thought and critical practice to find pathways out. While the concepts of periphery and Anthropocene have received attention in scholarly discussions, they are too often discussed independently of each other and there tends to be a temporal emphasis. The spatiality of the Anthropocene is surprisingly underlit. Consequently, there are productive benefits to examining these analytical categories together and from a spatial perspective. We argue that drawing attention to the intersection of periphery and Anthropocene provides an inventive way to rethink the urban condition today at a time of utmost pressure of social forces on the planet. Articulating the relationship might help us find pathways out of a crisis moment for architecture, cities, and the planet. In this special issue we expect to investigate emerging cross cutting themes such as:
1. Peripheral landscapes and infrastructure typologies;
2. Peripheral palimpsests and the planetary imaginary;
3. Peripheral modernities and “low typologies” of the Anthropocene;
