Revitalisation of a Strip Mall

The conversion of a derelict supermarket and its surrounding car park transforms the weakly defined centre of a Greater Graz suburb into a revitalised commercial strip. New seating, lighting, and outdoor activity give the site a more public character, extending its commercial programme into a communal setting that remains active into the evening.

A derelict supermarket and its car park in a weakly defined suburban centre are converted into a mixed retail strip. A lightweight steel frame extends around the parking area and carries lighting, signage, planting and places to linger, turning residual infrastructure into a legible shared exterior that stays active into the evening. The reuse of one of the most disposable everyday commercial types set the case for the FFG project CBT–Counterintuitive Building Types.
