Counterintuitive Typologies

Research and teaching focus

Counterintuitive Typologies is the title of Andreas’ research and teaching focus in supervised master’s theses, in design studios and currently in the a three-year research grant at the Austrian Science Promotion Agency (FFG) that has just been awarded (April 2022).
Counterintuitive Typologies is also the title of an enclosed booklet with 12 supervised Master’s theses that is published as a supplement to Andreas’ book Thinking Design: Blueprint for an Architecture of Typology. The theses envision architecture’s role as civic infrastructure and cultural agency when they speculate about future-proofing suburbia and building on the built – inclusively, sustainably and more beautifully. “Counterintuitive” can refer to context, form and use – the surplus of a public venue in suburbia’s monofunctional jungle, an unexpected encounter through cross-programming or the uncommon quality of formal complexity and tension in a sea of commodities and one-liners. All twelve theses were supervised by Associate Professor Andreas Lechner at Graz University of Technology between 2015 and 2021.
