Remnants of an Absence - Remembrances overlapped.
Spatial forms of expression in remembrance and the transformation of former sites of concentration camps. Approaching the site of former concentration camp Loibl/Ljubelj North.
This diploma thesis is concerned with questions of spatial-architectural manifestations in the process of remembrance, particularly with regard to the transformation of the sites of former concentration camps. The main emphasis will be on the analysis of sites of former Mauthausen satellite camps - where nowadays we find the remnants of remembrance as well as oblivion. The discussion should be viewed as an approach to the former Mauthausen satellite camp Loibl/Ljubelj North: two Mauthausen satellite camps were situated at Loiblpass/Ljubelj between 1943 and 1945 - forced labourers had to dig a tunnel running from north to south through the Krawank mountains serving the NS-regime as a strategic link to the Balkans. Following the end of World War II, the former concentration camp on the Austrian side fell into oblivion. It is only since 1995 that an annual memorial service is held - the site has been subject to constant change ever since. This thesis will analyse the site's transformation from being a site of National Socialist terror to a site of oblivion and of remembrance.
Key words: commemorative culture; concentration camp, Loibl/Ljubelj North concentration camp; Mauthausen satellite camps; memorial; monument; National Socialism; oblivion; remembrance
