Thinking Design – Blueprint for an Architecture of Typology
Andreas Lechner
Zurich: Park Books, 2021 · ISBN 978-3-03860-246-0
Thinking Design investigates the spatial relationships that recur across architecture’s diverse forms, periods and programmes. Organised around three essays—Tectonics, Type and Topos—it brings together comparative drawings of 144 buildings and projects across twelve public building types. Plans, sections and elevations establish a common basis for examining variation and continuity, making typology available as both a body of disciplinary knowledge and an instrument of design. Drawing becomes a means of identifying relationships that can inform further architectural transformations.

Architectural Affordances – Typologies of Umbau
Andreas Lechner, Gennaro Postiglione, Francesca Serrazanetti and Maike Gold, eds.
Naples: Thymos Books, 2025 · ISBN 978-88-32072-56-3
Architectural Affordances examines how buildings acquire, retain and lose capacities for transformation over time. A shared drawing protocol distinguishes retained fabric, demolition and addition, tracing successive material and functional changes in plan, section and elevation. These comparisons reveal how earlier design decisions enable and constrain later interventions. Typology becomes a way of reading the relationship between spatial persistence and changing use, while architectural affordances describe possibilities that emerge between a building’s material configuration and the demands placed upon it.

Counterintuitive Typologies – Architecture and the Disposable City
Andreas Lechner
Book in development · Working title
Counterintuitive Typologies examines peripheral buildings whose spatial and constructive systems outlast the economic regimes that produced them. Shopping centres, logistics halls and parking decks become sites for investigating how repetition, large spans and programmatic indifference may support unforeseen uses, while deep plans and infrastructural dependencies can limit them. Moving through territory, type and transformation, the book develops typology as a method for distinguishing contingent programmes from persistent structures and testing possibilities for reuse under material, economic and regulatory constraints.
︎︎︎Type as latent possibility.

Entwurf einer architektonischen Gebäudelehre
Andreas Lechner
Zurich: Park Books, 2021 · Second revised and extended edition; first published in 2018 · ISBN 978-3-03860-266-8
The German-language counterpart to Thinking Design develops an architectural building typology through comparative drawings of 144 buildings and projects. Essays on tectonics, type and topos connect the study of recurring spatial relationships with architectural judgement and design.
